The American Gem Society (AGS)

About the American Gem Society

The American Gem Society was founded in 1934 by a small group of leading jewelers including the great grandfather of modern gemology, Robert M. Shipley. Their goal was to create an organization that could help protect the jewelry-buying public from fraud, and false advertising.

Today, we’re proud to say, Shipley’s vision has become a reality. Nearly 3,500 jewelers, retailers, suppliers, individual titleholders and affiliates have joined the American Gem Society and have dedicated themselves to:
  • Consumer protection
  • Ethical business practices
  • Development and maintenance of superior gemological skills and knowledge

And we don't make it easy for them either. To join AGS, every member must go through a -peer-reviewed application process followed by a recertification exam every single year. This process ensures that every AGS-certified jeweler you meet is at the top of their game, and more importantly, each one has pledged to protect you, the consumer.

What is the American Gem Society Laboratories?

In 1996, the American Gem Society took consumer protection one step further. They opened a diamond grading lab to ensure consistent, consumer-oriented diamond grading reports.

Unlike many diamond grading reports, The American Gem Society Laboratories provides detailed information about diamonds — including cut — which is most important to its beauty.

The American Gem Society Laboratories is known in the industry to grade diamonds with a keen and unforgiving eye. But we have to; we grade diamonds to protect you.

When buying a diamond, simply request to see its American Gem Society Laboratories report — the only report that grades a diamond to the industry’s highest standards.
